Trait ontology has been a very useful tool to unambiguously represent trait of interests in genome studies especially when there is a need to compare results on traits measured across experiments and projects. The ATO project underwent great progress in the past years. Now the ATO has been further developed into three related ontologies: Vertebrate Trait (VT) Ontology, Livestock Product Trait (LPT) Ontology, and Clinical Measurement Ontology (CMO).

Vertebrate Trait (VT) Ontology is a controlled vocabulary for the description of
traits (measurable or observable characteristics) pertaining to the morphology,
physiology, or development of vertebrate organisms.
The Livestock Product Trait (LPT) Ontology is a controlled vocabulary for the description of traits (measurable or observable characteristics) pertaining to products produced by or obtained from the body of an agricultural animal or bird maintained for use and profit.
The Clinical Measurement Ontology (CMO) is designed to be used to standardize morphological and physiological measurement records generated from clinical and model organism research and health programs.
