Subject: Fully funded Master of Philosophy positions - including a
living
Date: Thu, 19 Feb 2026 17:52:04 -0600
Hi AnGenMap community.
We have two fully funded student opportunities at the University of Queensland.
Please help us distribute this to any students that you think would be
interested in this opportunity.
We are inviting Expressions of Interest (EOI) for two fully funded Master
of Philosophy (MPhil) positions at The University of Queensland (UQ) to
investigate enhancers and regulatory architecture in crossbred cattle using
CAGE-seq (Cap Analysis of Gene Expression) data. This work is funded by a
USDA-NIFA project.
This is a computational / data-analysis project (no wet-lab work). You will
work with large scale functional-genomics datasets to identify and
interpret active regulatory elements, connect enhancer activity to gene
regulation, and compare regulatory signals across crossbred populations.
Two positions are available (related project themes, different primary
supervisors):
1. Primary supervisor: Associate Professor Elizabeth Ross (UQ)
2. Primary supervisor: Dr Loan Nguyen (UQ)
You will work closely with our collaborators:
* Professor Clare Gill (Texas A&M University) [Project Lead]
* Dr Bailey Engle (USDA-ARS)
This scholarship includes:
* living stipend of $37,500 per annum tax free (2026 rate), indexed
annually
* tuition fees covered
* single overseas student health cover (for international candidates)
What you'll be doing (indicative)
* CAGE-seq data QC, alignment/quantification, and reproducible workflows
* Identification/characterisation of regulatory features (including
enhancer- associated transcription)
* Comparative analyses across crossbred groups and biological contexts
* Biological interpretation, visualisation, and scientific writing toward
an MPhil thesis Ideal background (Desired, not mandatory)
* A solid understanding of animal genetics
* Bioinformatics / computational biology / genetics / genomics skills
(or closely related)
* Demonstrated experience in R and/or Python, statistics, and working in
Linux/HPC environments
* Comfort with version control (Git) and reproducible analysis (workflows,
notebooks, containers-any are a plus)
* Strong scientific writing and attention to detail
Check your eligibility for enrollment before applying:

How to apply: EOI by email
Please email your EOI with the subject line exactly: EOI MPhil - enhancers
and include:
* CV
* Academic transcript(s)
* English language test results that meet UQ HDR English language
requirements - OR - reason for exemption (per UQ policy - check the website
for details)
* One example of past work (paper, thesis chapter, lab report, or other
scientific writing sample)
Send your EOI to BOTH:
* Associate Professor Elizabeth Ross: e.ross uq.edu.au
* Dr Loan Nguyen: t.nguyen3 uq.edu.au
Selected applicants will be contacted by email and asked follow-up
questions prior to final shortlisting.
Thank you,
