I. Project: NRSP-8: Swine Genome Committee
II. Cooperating Agencies and Principal Investigators
- Agencies and Departments Cooperating: North Carolina Research and Experiment Station and Animal Science Department, North Carolina State University
- Leaders of the Project: Joe Cassady (leader)
- Objectives
Objective 1: Develop high resolution comparative genome maps aligned across species
that link agricultural animal maps to those of the human and mouse genomes.
Objective 2: Increase the marker density of existing linkage maps used in QTL mapping
and integrate them with physical maps of animal chromosomes.
Objective 3: Expand and enhance internationally shared species genome databases and
provide other common resources that facilitate genome mapping.
IV. General Project Plan
A. Develop high resolution comparative genome maps and increase the marker density of existing linkage maps. (Objectives 1 & 2)
Linkage map candidate genes associated with male or female reproduction.
V. Work Progress
A. Increase the marker density of existing linkage maps. (Objectives 1 & 2)
Candidate genes used in which have not been previously, linkage mapped will be mapped using the USDA mapping family.
VI. Additions to the Project
None.
- Applications of Findings
- Linkage mapping of candidate genes will aid in comparative mapping between the pig genome and genomes of other species. It will also result in additional tools for future genotyping efforts. .
VIII. General Project Plan
- Objectives 1 & 2
SNP identification by sequencing will become our preferred method of genotyping individuals to be linkage mapped.
VIII. Publications
None
